Tips For Packing a Banjo for
Shipment
Often customers will ship
banjos to us for repair as we ship banjos out to fill orders.
It is an unsettling feeling to know that someone's pride and
joy is about to travel across country in much more harsh
conditions that a person can live through. We have put
together a few tips that we hope will help you to safely pack
your banjo for its trip. |
Your package will go through a great
deal of vibrating and thumb screws can work loose as well as
fall completely out. This can cause damage from the
flange not sitting in the resonator correctly and the screws
can also damage finish. We like to stretch a rubber band
from thumb screw to thumb screw to lock them together.
|

|
It can be a false feeling of safety when
the resonator fits so snuggly in a soft case, but when a banjo
case is dropped on its end, the banjo will likely crash right
through the resonator ripping out L-brackets, and breaking
flanges. We pack Styrofoam tightly between the tension
hoop and the case walls. This helps to keep the pot in
place in a drop. In short, without crushing your banjos
yourself, just keep it from moving as much as you can inside
the case.
|

|
Of course we would never ship an
instrument without a case, the case does not need to be
damaged either. Use an oversized box with room for more
packing material. Some of the shipping companies will
pack it for you but it can get expensive. That is OK
once but save your box and materials for future shipping, then
you don't have to pay again for the materials. In the
best scenario, wrap the case with bubble wrap and fill the
rest of the box with packing peanuts. This will help to
absorb shock in a drop.
Place the label on the largest side, not
an end. Shipping conveyer electronic readers often read
from the top down so if your box is flat, there is less chance
for it to be kicked off of the belt. Insure it well and
hope for the best.
